Bass Instruments: The History of the Bass Guitar

Instruments teach the people who use them a great deal. For playing an instrument, you can have your first example of love without need of love in return from a person loving their instrument, you can learn notes and patience and many other valuable lessons, some of which have to do with a persons emotions or morals. While some people may not understand when a musician says that an instrument shapes your life or that it shapes you as a person many other musicians would have to agree. You learn a great deal from an instrument and from the experience of trying to learn how to play one. You learn to cooperate with something new and the beauty that can come out of it. With the history that is behind the bass guitar and other bass instruments there is no wonder behind the enchantment that they hold.

The bass guitar has been around for over seven decades and was originally developed in Seattle, Washington. When this took place it all surrounded one man named Paul Tutmarc, who placed his newly made jazz instrument in an upright position rather then the hand held bass that some prefer today. He even designed his bass guitar to be played this way much like a cello but with a new sound many people had not previously heard before and truly enjoyed. Paul Tutmarc made a company called Auiovox which featured the electric bass guitar in 1935 under the name electric bass fiddle, which some people still refer to the electric bass as. Unlike what most believe, the first bass guitar was not a hallow mass without frets but in fact not only had frets but also had four strings, just over 30 inches of scale length and was easily played in the upright position.

In recent years and even going years back every person who enjoys guitar or bass guitar knows what fender is as a company. In 1950, Leo Fender and George Fullerton developed the first electric fender bass that was ready for mass production. It was in 1951 that this bass ended up being known as the Fender precision bass that so many people know about today. This was the first bass that was designed to be held like the bass that we know today with curves that are made to help it be held comfortably or even be rested against your lap as your play sitting comfortably.

In later years, the bass continued to become better known and to advance which included Monk Montgomery who was the first person to go on tour with a fender bass guitar as his instrument of choice. There came to be many other people who toured with this instrument and today it is one of the main parts of many different famous bands. It is also a part of many musicians’ hearts. This is one musician that has not only effect the people who have come to love it as an instrument to play or an instrument that love to hear but has also effected history and helped music to progress.

The Double Bass – Then and Now

In the modern orchestra, there are a number of stringed instruments that cover a variety of sounds. Highs and lows, the entire spectrum of sound audible to the human can be accessed with stringed instruments. At the lowest end of the spectrum, the double bass, or upright bass, can access the lowest sounds discernible by the human ear. This acoustic instrument was invented with its cousins, like the violin, in 15th century Europe. Since then, it has enjoyed a great deal of usage in many orchestral works. The bass is played by a bassist using a bow, not unlike a violin. The shear size of the instrument means that is has to be standing on the ground while being played.

In orchestral play, the double bass does not have enough volume, and as such it requires six to eight bassists playing in unison in order to form the integral part of the musical piece. In the 18th and 19th centuries the bass rose as not only a solo instrument, but also an integral part of an orchestra for the formation of deep bass tones. In the 19th century, especially, there are a number of pieces that are still used today in studies of the double bass and its play. Through the 20th century to the present, the double bass had started to enjoy a good amount of solo work composed and orchestral parts dictate.

In addition to its tradition use, around the year 1890, a troupe of jazz artists had adopted the bass as an instrument, In modern music, those who are under the label of bluegrass musician have adopted the double bass for the low sounds it provides. In bluegrass, the instrument is always plucked as opposed to played with the bow. In jazz and bluegrass, slap playing is another style of play that is popular, although it is very much the case that slap playing is a style of play that is considered by few to be a bit of a crutch in the way of play that it employs.

In today's time, the bass instrument is seeing much in the way of play, especially in rockabilly and psychobilly genres of music. It is frequently played with some sort of audio capture, and amplification device so that the band need only utilize a single double bass. In both genres, the strings are plucked as opposed to being played with a bow. Across a number of genres: blues, jazz, swing, polka and other such genres, the double bass enjoys a great deal of usage.

The double bass is a stringed instrument that is capable of acoustically providing sounds in the lower end of the spectrum. The double bass is a popular stand up instrument that provides a well loved sound. The double bass sees a great deal of use in a variety of different styles and genres of music, which makes it a permanent fixture in the world of music. As other instruments grow and change with time, the stand up bass is still a traditional fixture that seems to remain perfect as time shows no change is necessary to improve its play.

The History of the Bass Guitar

The electric bass guitar is a staple of the music scene today. It provides the bass spectrum of sound to the likes of rock, jazz, metal, blues and numerous other musical acts. The bass may provide one part of the larger melody, or be featured as the primary instrument. Over the course of 70 plus years, the bass guitar has enjoyed its place in the musical world.

The electric bass guitar was invented in the 30s by Paul Tutmarc, as an alternative to the double bass, which is easier to carry, transport and use. In the 50s, Leo Fender was responsible for developing the first mass produced electric bass guitar, which became the standard of touring musicians. The first artist to tour with the Fender guitar was Monk Montgomery, who toured with the big band led by Lionel Hampton. Many others began to adopt the guitar during this time, and interest picked up. Beginning in the 60s, Gibson released their version of the bass guitar, know as the EB series. During the 50s and 60s, the instrument was known as the Fender Bass, because of the quick speed at which the company began to produce the instruments. By the end of the 60s however, the instrument became simply the electric bass.

In the 70s, new advances to the electronics were introduced. Electric stringed instruments produce the signal by using magnetic coils which would pick up the vibrations and then the electronics would amplify the signal. In 1957, the split pickup was introduced which used two coils with their poles and wiring reversed. The combined effect was equivalent to the two being wired in parallel, producing a hum bucking effect. Other designs featured two coils with one close to the bridge, one close to the fret board. Each of these produces completely different sounds.

The new electronics of the 70s featured actively powered pickups and amplification built into the guitar. These electronics not only included the pickup and amplification parts of the circuitry, but also frequency filtering and processing, which helped improve the sounds intended and eliminated those that were not wanted. Different manufacturers would produce slightly different electronics, which would cause guitars from different manufacturers be used for different styles of music.

In the 1980s, bass designers will still developing and exploring new approaches. A headless band, for example, was introduced in 1979. In 1987, the fretless Ashbory bass was invented, using silicone rubber for strings and a piezoelectric pickup, creating a sound similar to the double bass with a short scale length of 18". The hollow bodied acoustic bass guitars using pickups for amplification became especially popular in the 1980s by MTV's "Unplugged" television show.

Five string basses became more popular, more affordable and more widely available during the 1990s, meaning bass players from numerous genres began to play them for added lower range. Onboard battery powered electronics also became increasingly available despite only being available on boutique, expensive instruments before this point in time.

Introduction to Bass Guitar Tablature

basstabA guitar tab, or guitar tablature is a system of letters, symbols, notations and other visual representations that dictate how music should be played, rather than following traditional musical notation. Guitar tablature gives directions to the bass player or guitar player regarding how they should play a musical piece. What makes guitar tablature and bass guitar tablature the best solution is that it is most compatible with stringed instruments, rather than with other instruments like the piano.

First and foremost, bass guitar tablature consists of a diagram of strings on the bass guitar with the finger positions indicated by numbers that correspond to whichever frets are appropriate. Sometimes there are also numerical representations for which fingers should be used in some versions of bass guitar tablature. Bass guitar tablature is very important for anyone who is an enthusiast and who is keen on learning new music and new technicalities associated with the bass guitar. When a song has extensive use on the guitar, bass guitar tablature is the best source for learning how to play it both with plucking and other types of fingering as well.

A bass guitar offers a slightly different shape in comparison to other guitars, such as the classical guitar, the Hawaiian guitar, the rhythm guitar and so on. The bass guitar is an instrument that is used primarily for complementing an orchestration or band sound, or filling up the sound. The bass guitar goes in tune well with drums and percussion instruments and also suits the rhythm well. Bass guitars neck and fret boards are much longer than other guitar fret boards, and the average bass guitar only has a total of four strings called bass strings, rather than the traditional guitar strings.

Bass guitar tablature and guitar tablature in general have vertical lines that represent each of the strings of the guitar, no matter what type of guitar is being used, in addition to horizontal lines that represent the frets, and dots that are meant to signify the position of the fingers. In the case of bass guitar tablature, there are only going to be four horizontal lines, each signifying the four strings that the bass guitar has. Bass guitars can never be used with a spectrum, an object that is used to strum guitar strings, but rather it is being played with fingers and plucked. Therefore, your standard bass guitar tablature is going to be significantly different in comparison to the type of tablature that is used for rhythm guitars and classical guitars.

Learning how to read bass guitar tablature will help improve your bass guitar playing skills by giving you a much wider repertoire of music that you can learn how to play.

Robert Trujillo: Bassist for Metallica

Metallica was up to the task of performing at Ozzfest this year, for they commanded the attention of the massive stadium. Robert Trujillo was rocking for over two hours with drummer Lars Ulrich, singer/guitarist James Hetfield and lead guitarist Kirk Hammett, all of whom brought forth a power that made the audience forget that there were other performers at the concert event. Metallica can easily be described as one of the hardest working metal bands, and Robert Trujillo may be the hardest working metal head of the entire band.

It had been years since Trujillo took the place of Jason Newsted. Robert Trujillo was brought up on Motown, with a sprinkling of Black Sabbath and Rush. In the early 90s, he formed the thrash band Suicidal Tendencies and the funk-metal band Infectious Grooves. After suicidal tendencies, the aggressively thumbed bass guitarist played in the Ozzy Osbourne band for seven years. Overall, Trujillo was renowned for his metal-funk music and his talents on the bass. The overall heaviness of his playing and his monster like persona, combined with his studious work ethic, made him the perfect choice for the role as Metallica's bassist.

As documented in Some Kind of Monster, Robert Trujillo joined Metallica as it was growing and evolving. Despite that, however, it had to have been difficult for the artist to take the mantle of bass guitarist for Metallica. The legend of Cliff Burton would cast the largest shadow, and for 15 years, Newsted had made his mark. With the release of the album Death Magnetic, it became apparent that Robert was up to the task, as his bass playing worked to bind together the power of the Metallica sound. The album demonstrates a good deal of Trujillo's subtle influence in terms of funk, but the album is by all means a pure metal album.

Trujillo's style of play involves an advance and self developed method of finger style technique. His predecessor was almost exclusively a pick style player of the bass guitar. His technique developed to utilize three plucking fingers, in an up-down motion. He is also very talented in the art of slap bass music.

Death Magnetic will user in a return to Metallica's roots as a heavy metal band. The complexity of the album, along with strong, powerful lyrics, would seem to preclude audience participation during live play. However, the powerhouse stage presence and seamless integration of the members of Metallica, would over take the audience and cause them to lose themselves to the metal and music offered by the band as they take from their past and the new album.

Metallica is proving that it is capable of withstanding the test of time, and thanks to the heavy handed, power house bass playing provided by Trujillo, the band has gone back to their roots and produced a new mature sound that is sure to please fans. Bass guitarist Robert Trujillo most certainly was able to take on the mantle of Metallica bassist, while bringing an element of his style and groove to the mix.

Musical Instruments Bass

When some people hear the word bass, they immediately think about the bass guitar, a popular instrument in many types of music today. However, there is actually a large number of different instruments that fall under the base category, and the bass guitar is only one of them. Bass instruments are instruments that produce a specific type of sound. Bass is used to describe tones of low range or low frequency. When played in orchestras or ensembles, these notes are most frequently used as a way to provide a counter melody or counterpoint in a harmonic context. This is ideal for outlining or juxtaposing the progression of chords, or underlining the rhythm using percussion instruments. In popular music of today, the bass part of the music is most commonly intended to provide support both rhythmically and harmonically as well.

There are numerous different bass instruments, including bass drums, bass clarinets, bass guitars and many others. Let us look at some of these instruments and what sets them apart from the other instruments in the bass family.

Bass Clarinet -

The bass clarinet is a musical instrument that belongs to the clarinet family. Like the soprano B sharp clarinet which is a much more common clarinet, the bass clarinet is most commonly pitched in B sharp, meaning that it is a transposing instrument and that when C is written, it sound as B sharp would. The bass clarinet, however, also plays its notes an octave below the standard B sharp clarinet. Bass clarinets available in other keys, like C or A for example are also in existence but they are very rare and not commonly played at all.

Bass Drum -

Bass drums are large drums that produce a note of either low definite pitch or indefinite pitch. There are basically three different general classifications for bass drums. The first bass drum classification is the concert bass drum, the second classification is the kick drum and the third classification is the pitched bass drum. The type that is most commonly seen and heard in concert band music and orchestral music is the concert bass drum, which comes in a variety of different sizes but is most commonly the largest drum in the ensemble. The kick drum on the other hand is a drum that has a beater attached to a pedal, and it is most commonly seen in drum kits because the drummer is managing numerous different types of drums and cannot beat on the bass drum without a free hand to do so. The third and final type of bass drum is the pitched bass drum. This drum is the most common in marching bands as well as drum corps and is usually grouped in a set of three to five drums. This drum is generally tuned to a specific pitch and is the largest drum played in the ensemble.

Bass Guitar -

The bass guitar is available both in an acoustic bass guitar setup and an electric bass guitar as well. The electric bass guitar is a stringed instrument that is played primarily with either the fingers and thumb or by using a pick. When playing the bass guitar, some of the most popular motions are plucking, popping, slapping, tapping and thumping the strings. The bass guitar is quite similar in appearance and construction to a regular electric guitar, but the bass guitar generally has a larger body and a longer neck. The longer neck creates a longer scale length, and there are usually four strings that are tuned similarly to the double bass.

The bass guitar notation is generally found in bass clef about one octave higher than the sound that it actually presents. Just like the standard electric guitar, the electric bass guitar is most commonly plugged directly into an amplifier and speaker so that it can produce a greater sound in the event of live performances.

The electric bass guitar has largely replaced the double bass or stand up bass in popular music. This is because the bass guitar is capable of providing the same low pitched bass runs and bass lines in many different styles of music. In other words, the bass guitar is not nearly as limited when it comes to the different types of sounds that can be created. Accordingly, the bass guitar can be implemented into a musical ensemble as a solo instrument in many styles of music including rock, funk, Latin, fusion and jazz.

Double Bass -

The double bass, also known as the stand up bass or the contrabass is the largest and the lowest pitched of all bowed string instruments that you will find in the modern symphony orchestra. The double bass is a standard member within the string section of the orchestra, and can also be found in smaller string ensembles as well. The Double Bass is constructed from several different types of wood, including maple, spruce and ebony. Maple is most commonly used for the back of the double bass, with spruce making up the top, and ebony being utilized for the fingerboard.

The origin of the double bass is largely unknown. Many are not sure of whether the double bass is a descendant of the standard violin or of the viola de gamba, but it is traditionally assumed that the double bass comes from the violin family. The double bass does have features that liken it to other instruments within the violin family, but it also has features which are unique to the viola family.

Music is a truly intense part of every culture around the world. Music can bring people together, and can differentiate them from one another just the same. Bass music is an interesting style of music because it involves a much lower range of notes and sounds than other instruments that can play a much wider range of sounds. Still, bass instruments are vital in many types of music, including jazz, blues, fusion, rock and even R&B.

Playing Bass Guitar in a Band

playingguitarPeople choose one instrument over another, like a bass guitar over a regular guitar, for a variety of different reasons. What makes someone choose a tuba over a flute or drums over a glockenspiel is mostly just the person's preference.  People choose what they like to listen to, what they like the look of, and what they think will be the most fun or the easiest to play.  Many people who want to learn a stringed instrument choose the bass guitar, because it has a reputation as being easy to play, without giving much consideration to the rest.  But if you're thinking of learning the bass guitar to play with friends or even as part of a band, you can make sure it's a match for your personality first.

You don't mind not being the star or the one in the spotlight. If you want to be the lead person in the band, unless you sing lead it's unlikely you'll be the 'star' while playing bass guitar. Many people prefer to be more behind the scenes.  They like to be a vital part of the music and having fun without having all the attention focused on them all of the time.  A person like this would make an ideal bass player in a band, because the bass can be as vital as the drums for keeping a rhythm, and it's key for forming the right chord at the right time, but it's a much more subtle role than lead singer or lead guitarist. Some jazz along with the occasional rock song will have a bass solo, but it's far more rare than a lead guitar solo.

You have a good sense of rhythm and ear for chords. While anyone who makes music needs a sense of rhythm, some instruments can get away with being imperfect in this area.  A lead guitarist might have a less than perfect sense of timing, but he or she relies on the drums and the bass guitar to set the rhythm and keep the song moving at the correct speed.  Even if some guitar lines fall behind or go to fast, it's easy to get back in time at certain spots thanks to the clear beat laid down by the bass player and the drummer. The good news is that if tempo is a problem for you, it's an easy problem to work on.  Get a metronome and practice!

You're content with a simple musical part. While bass guitar is an important part of a band, the bass part usually doesn't offer a whole lot of variety. At its simplest, the bass part will only require different notes based on the chord at the time in similar rhythms throughout the whole song. For some, that would be only repetitive and boring.  For others, it's perfect.

Look at yourself and what will be required of you if you choose to play bass guitar, and you'll be able to tell if you're a good match for the instrument.

The Decline and Potential Rise of the Bass Saxophone

saxBass instruments are typically the largest of instruments, and the bass saxophone is not exception. This sometimes forgotten instrument can be awkward to move about, and it suffers from little love in the music department in terms of songs and pieces written for the instrument. It is frequently replaced by other bass instruments, with a sharper decline as the electric bass guitar hit the scene. It is just the case that there is little need for the instrument in modern music. It does have a chance that newer musicians will see it as a means of reconnecting with music of the past.

The saxophone is a traditional jazz instrument. Other genres of music do not favor the instrument, instead relying upon stringed instruments. These more well known instruments are those that are favored in part because of the familiarity of them to the younger music scene. Many older works do have parts written for the bass saxophone, but these parts are usually played by other more accessible bass instruments because of the lack of availability of the bass saxophone and its musicians.

Bass guitarists and even tuba players are more readily available. The instruments are also more affordable because of their availability. It is because of the cost and availability that younger musicians are not picking up the bass saxophone. This is why there is little desire to try the instrument and consider it for using through out the young musicians career.

Of course, this does not mean that the bass saxophone is without a place in the music scene. Changes are always occurring which could sky rocket the instrument into the limelight and interest will grow significantly.

The bass saxophone may be an instrument that is inherently difficult and awkward to carry around, and there may not necessarily be a lot of music out there that is written specifically for playing by the saxophone, but all is not lost for this intriguing instrument. If more people were to begin to play the saxophone, there would probably be a much greater call for written music for it, and it would probably be included more often in many bands. The saxophone is one of the most expensive instruments, which is probably one of the largest contributing factors to why few schools are incorporating it into their marching bands. This may also be why so many younger musicians are choosing the saxophone as their instrument of choice, in addition to the fact that the instrument is bulky and can be difficult to get used to playing. Because the instrument is so large, it is demanding that a musician be strong enough not only to carry it, but also strong enough to put enough air into it to generate the right kinds of sounds.

The Legacy of Jaco Pastorius – Joe Sinaguglia

For over twenty years now, the planet has been without the presence of Jaco Pastorius, the revolutionary electric bass player of the 70s. He was a member of the group Weather Report and later led his own bands. Sadly, the lifestyle caught up to him in 1987. Despite his death, reverence for his style and impact is felt by electric bassists everywhere.

In November, 2008 a tribute band was formed, featuring top notch musicians such as drummer Kenwood Denard and trumpeter Randy Brecker. They played Pastorius' music in Times Square, at the Iridium jazz club. In attendance at the event was Ingrid Pastorius, the widow of the late musician. One of the bassists of the tribute band was a 21 year old musician by the name Joe Sinaguglia. The bassist was debuting in New York, with an appropriate introduction to the musician's playing capabilities. Joe Sinaguglia obtained a spot in the band thanks to his instructor at The Bass Collective. He was only suppose to rehearse, but was asked to fill in at the performance after Darryl Jones of the Rolling Stones was forced to drop out.

Joe grew up listening to Weather Reports albums, enchanted by the music and inspired to learn to play bass. Despite playing bass with musicians who once played with Pastorious before he was even born, for Joe Sinaguglia it was a comfortable playing environment. His upbringing definitely played a role in Joe's life. His mother is a high school music teacher, his father is a saxophone player, his brother Matt plays the drums, and his aunt is the nationally renowned jazz pianist Joyce DiCamillo. During Joe's performance, his aunt was in attendance. For her, the performance brought back memories of the bassist past.

Joe originally wanted to play electric guitar in a jazz setting, but found it too difficult. After struggling with it for a long while, he discovered the electric bass, and was hooked ever since. The bass was as natural to him as breathing, and in no time he mastered the skills require to play the fret less bass. The measure of a true musical gift is that after beginning to learn about the instrument, the musician throw away his sheet music and truly begins to explore the instrument and make music without any guidance. That was the sentiment that Joe's aunt held for Joe. Loving an instrument means that the musician will want to experiment a lot, and find their own music. The skills that Joe developed in his ability to play have really made him an exceptional bassist, and thanks to fate, New York has gotten a taste of that talent.

Graduating high school in 2005, Joe Sinaguglia hopes to become a private instructor of bass and develop his reputation, while making it big on the New York scene. He has a band of similarly aged musicians with whom Joe plays regularly, and he hopes to be able to really see his career grow.
